Early detection tools for Alzheimer's disease: a multi-site observational study

Alzheimer’s disease is often diagnosed late, making it harder to offer the right support. The AD-RIDDLE study aims to change this by testing new, simple tools in everyday clinics. Researchers want to see if digital thinking tests on tablets or computers, paired with quick blood tests, can spot early brain changes. The project is running across Europe, including the UK, until late 2028. It is open to adults aged 40 and over. This includes people attending memory clinics for symptoms, as well as healthy volunteers with no memory issues. Taking part involves answering lifestyle questions, trying digital memory activities, and giving a blood sample. You will not have to test any new medicines. By joining, you can help doctors discover better, quicker ways to diagnose and manage Alzheimer’s disease for everyone in the future.

Vad handlar denna studie om?

Alzheimer's disease touches the lives of millions of families across the UK. Today, many people only receive a diagnosis after their symptoms have progressed significantly. Getting an early diagnosis is crucial because it allows people to plan ahead, make positive lifestyle changes, and access the right support and treatments much sooner. Researchers across Europe are working together on a project called AD-RIDDLE to make early detection easier, faster, and more accessible in everyday healthcare settings.

Rather than relying on complex hospital machinery right away, this study is testing a 'toolbox' of straightforward checks. These include digital memory games that can be completed on a smartphone, tablet, or computer, alongside simple blood tests that look for early biological clues linked to brain health. Researchers want to find out how well these new digital and blood tests work in real-world clinics compared to traditional, more invasive medical checks.

This is an observational study, which means no one will be asked to take experimental medications. Instead, researchers simply want to observe how accurately these new tools perform across a wide range of people. Whether you have noticed changes in your memory or have no brain health concerns at all, taking part helps scientists build a future where Alzheimer's can be spotted and managed far earlier.

Viktiga punkter

  • Tests new digital memory games and simple blood checks to spot Alzheimer's early.
  • Open to adults aged 40 and over, both with and without memory concerns.
  • Observational research only—there are no experimental drugs involved.
  • Helps make future Alzheimer's diagnosis quicker and less invasive.
  • Runs across European clinics, including specialist centres in the UK, until 2028.

Vem kan vara berättigad?

This study is open to adults aged 40 and over who can speak and read English comfortably. Researchers are looking for two main groups of people. First, they welcome adults being seen at specialist memory clinics for the first time due to concerns about their thinking or memory. Second, they are looking for healthy volunteers aged 50 and over who do not have memory difficulties, to see how the tests work across the general population.

To join, you should feel comfortable using a smartphone, tablet, or computer to complete basic activities. It is also helpful, though not required, to have a friend, partner, or family member who can act as a study partner and answer occasional questions about your day-to-day well-being.

You might not be able to participate if you have severe sight, hearing, or neurological conditions that prevent you from using a touchscreen or understanding the study instructions. People who are unable to give informed consent for themselves will also not be able to take part.

Kan denna studie passa dig?

Svara på dessa snabba frågor för att se om du kan vara berättigad. Detta är endast en vägledning — forskarteamet fattar det slutgiltiga beslutet.

  1. I am aged 40 or over.
  2. I can comfortably read and speak English.
  3. I feel able to use a touchscreen tablet, smartphone, or computer for simple tasks.
  4. I am willing to provide a routine blood sample.
  5. I do not have severe sight or hearing issues that prevent me using digital screens.

Vad innebär deltagande?

Taking part does not involve testing any new medicines or changing your current treatments. Instead, you will be asked to complete several simple checks. You will answer questions about your overall health and lifestyle, and you will complete short, interactive thinking and memory games on a digital screen, either at home or during a clinic visit. You will also provide a small blood sample so researchers can check for natural markers related to brain health.

If you are already attending a memory clinic, some standard tests your doctor orders—such as routine brain scans—may be shared with the research team. In some cases, you may be invited to take part in extra optional checks, like a lumbar puncture, but this is entirely your choice. The wider project runs until December 2028, and taking part generally involves one or two main study sessions, with any ongoing follow-up clearly explained by your local clinic team beforehand.

Potentiella risker och fördelar

Taking part may not directly improve your personal health, but your contribution could play a major role in transforming how doctors spot and manage Alzheimer's disease for future generations. The physical risks of the study are very low. Giving a blood sample can sometimes cause mild discomfort or temporary bruising around the needle site. The digital memory tests are completely painless, though they do require some concentration. If you agree to optional hospital procedures, such as a lumbar puncture, these will be explained carefully and may carry a small risk of a brief headache. Your participation is completely voluntary, and you are free to stop at any time without giving a reason and without it affecting your usual NHS care.

Vanliga frågor

Will taking part change my current medical care or prescriptions?

No. This is an observational study, not a drug trial. You will continue to take your normal medications and receive your standard NHS care without interruption.

Do I have to be good with technology to join?

You only need basic comfort using a touchscreen phone, tablet, or computer. The digital activities are designed to be user-friendly, and clinic staff can help guide you.

Do I need to have memory problems to take part?

No. The study is also looking for volunteers aged 50 and older who have healthy memory and thinking skills to serve as a comparison group.

Do I have to agree to every test?

No. While the digital tasks and blood tests are core parts of the study, any additional hospital tests (like a lumbar puncture) are completely optional and voluntary.

Kan jag lämna studien om jag ändrar mig?

Yes, absolutely. You can withdraw from the study at any point without needing an explanation, and your regular medical care will not be affected in any way.
