Varför detta händer

Both substances affect how your blood clots, but in different ways. Aspirin is an antiplatelet medicine that stops blood cells (platelets) from sticking together. Ginkgo biloba also has blood-thinning properties. When used together, they have an 'additive effect', meaning they combine to make the blood much thinner than intended.

You should consult your doctor before taking ginkgo biloba if you are already taking aspirin. If your doctor confirms you can take both, watch closely for signs of unusual bleeding or bruising. If you have a planned surgery or dental work, ensure your doctor knows you take these, as you may need to stop them well in advance.

Blödningsrubbningar eller kommande operation

Both aspirin and ginkgo biloba thin the blood. Taking them together significantly increases your risk of severe bleeding. You must stop taking them at least 7 to 14 days before any planned surgery or dental work.

Astma

If you have asthma, aspirin can trigger a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction or a sudden worsening of your breathing (aspirin-induced asthma).

Children and teenagers under 16

Never give aspirin to anyone under 16 unless specifically directed by a specialist. It can cause Reye’s syndrome, a rare but potentially fatal condition affecting the brain and liver.

Pregnancy (third trimester)

Do not take aspirin during the last 3 months of pregnancy. It can cause serious heart and kidney problems in the unborn baby and lead to heavy bleeding during childbirth.

Epilepsy or history of seizures

Ginkgo biloba can lower your seizure threshold, making fits more likely. You should avoid this supplement if you have epilepsy or are taking medication to prevent seizures.

Alkohol

Drinking alcohol while taking aspirin increases the risk of stomach irritation and bleeding. When combined with ginkgo biloba, which also has blood-thinning properties, the risk of internal bleeding may be further increased. It is best to limit alcohol intake.

Caffeine (Coffee, Tea, Energy Drinks)

Aspirin can slow down the rate at which your body gets rid of caffeine, potentially leading to jitters, a racing heart, or insomnia. Furthermore, ginkgo biloba may interact with caffeine to increase blood pressure or increase the risk of seizures in sensitive individuals.

Garlic, Ginger, and Turmeric (in large amounts)

These foods have natural blood-thinning properties. Consuming them in large medicinal quantities (rather than normal cooking amounts) alongside aspirin and ginkgo biloba can significantly increase your risk of bruising or bleeding.
