Typ 1-diabetes is a condition were your body cannot make insulin. It is different to type 2 diabetes which happens when the body doesn’t use insulin properly or doesn’t make enough of it.

The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown. It is not directly inherited, but having a family member with type 1 diabetes can slightly increase your risk of having it.

The symptoms of type 1 diabetes often include feeling very thirsty, peeing a lot, feeling tired, losing weight without trying, and blurry vision.

How do you know if you have type 1 diabetes?

You can keep your blood glucose levels from getting too high by carefully managing insulin doses, monitoring your blood sugar regularly, eating a balanced diet, and staying active.

What can someone with type 1 diabetes do to stop their blood glucose going too high?

Type 1 diabetes can cause weight loss before diagnosis. Once treatment begins, weight may stabilise or even increase as insulin helps your body use glucose effectively.
