Taking turmeric with losartan may cause your blood pressure to drop lower than intended. It might also increase the amount of losartan that stays in your bloodstream, potentially increasing the risk of side effects like dizziness or kidney strain.
Why this happens
Turmeric (specifically curcumin) has natural blood-pressure-lowering properties that can add to the effects of losartan. Additionally, turmeric may interfere with certain enzymes in the liver (such as CYP2C9) and transport proteins that help clear losartan from your body, leading to higher levels of the medicine in your system.
What you should do
Use caution if combining these two. If you regularly take turmeric supplements, monitor your blood pressure at home and watch for signs of low blood pressure, such as feeling lightheaded, dizzy, or faint (especially when standing up). It is best to inform your GP or pharmacist before starting high-dose turmeric supplements while on blood pressure medication.
Important precautions
Pregnancy
You must not take losartan if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It can cause serious injury or death to an unborn baby, particularly if used in the second and third trimesters.
High potassium levels (Hyperkalaemia)
Losartan can increase potassium levels in your blood. You should avoid using potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium. Be aware that high-dose turmeric supplements may also contain significant amounts of potassium, which could further increase this risk.
Surgery or use of blood thinners
Turmeric supplements can thin the blood and increase the risk of bleeding. You must stop taking turmeric at least two weeks before any scheduled surgery and consult your doctor if you are already taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication.
Food and drink warnings
Alcohol
Drinking alcohol while taking losartan can increase the medicine's blood-pressure-lowering effect. This may make you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or faint, especially when standing up.
It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol when taking turmeric supplements. Both alcohol and high doses of turmeric can put strain on the liver; combining them may increase the risk of liver irritation or damage.
Potassium-rich foods (e.g., bananas, spinach, avocados) and salt substitutes
Losartan can increase the levels of potassium in your blood. Consuming large amounts of potassium-rich foods or using salt substitutes containing potassium can lead to dangerously high potassium levels (hyperkalaemia).

Can I take Sertraline and Fluoxetine together?
Taking sertraline and fluoxetine together significantly increases the risk of a rare but serious condition called serotonin syndrome. This happens because both medicines work by increasing the level of a chemical called serotonin in your brain. If levels get too high, it can cause symptoms like shivering, diarrhoea, confusion, severe muscle tightness, fever, and even seizures. Additionally, fluoxetine can slow down how your body breaks down sertraline, leading to a build-up of the drug in your system and increasing the risk of side effects.
