Cromolyn sodium nasal spray is used to prevent and treat symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever).

This is a condition where the inside of your nose becomes inflamed and irritated, causing symptoms include sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, and an itchy nose.

It is commonly caused by allergier to substances such as pollen and animal fur.

Cromolyn sodium nasal spray is available on prescription, or you can buy it over-the-counter at a pharmacy.

Cromolyn sodium works by preventing the release of histamine and other inflammatory substances, helping to reduce allergic reactions and inflammation.

Histamine is normally released by the immune system when the body comes into contact with an allergen, such as pollen, dust, or pet dander.

Common side effects of cromolyn sodium are:

  • Nasal stinging or burning.

  • Headache.

  • Sneezing.

A full list of side effects can be found in the manufacturer's leaflet.

To make sure this is the right treatment for you, before you start using sodium cromoglicate nasal spray it is important that your doctor or pharmacist knows:

  • Om du någonsin har haft en allergisk reaktion mot en medicin.

  • If you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breastfeeding. This is because while you are expecting or feeding a baby, you should only take medicines on the recommendation of a doctor.

  1. Read the manufacturer's instructions to make sure you know how to work the spray.

  2. Remove the protective cap. (Before you use the spray for the first time, activate the spray a few times until you can see a fine mist in the air.)

  3. Blow your nose gently to clear it.

  4. Close one nostril by placing a finger against one side of your nose. Then, using your other hand, put one finger on each side of the nozzle of the bottle and insert the nozzle into your open nostril. Try to keep the bottle upright as you do this.

  5. Breathe in through your nose as you press down on the nozzle to activate the spray. Then remove the nozzle from your nostril and breathe out through your mouth.

  6. Use the spray in your other nostril by repeating the steps above.

  7. Wipe the nozzle with a clean tissue and replace the cap. (If the nozzle becomes blocked, you can remove it from the bottle and rinse it under warm water.)

  • Read the information leaflet that comes with the spray before you start using it. It explains how to use the spray correctly and lists possible side effects.

  • The usual dose is one spray into each nostril 2-4 times a day. Use the spray regularly, even if your symptoms improve. Cromolyn sodium works by preventing allergy symptoms, rather than treating symptoms once they start.

  • If you are using the spray for hay fever, you may be advised to start treatment 2-3 weeks before the pollen season begins, as it can take a few days to start working.

  • If you forget a dose, use it as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Do not use two doses at the same time.

  • Förvara alla läkemedel utom räckhåll och synhåll för barn.

  • Förvara på en sval, torr plats, borta från direkt värme och ljus.
